Another Arturo?

Working in Bible School the week before last, we were able to work with over 100 children every day. What a blessing it was to see so many children in one place at the same time!

I spent most of my time at the piano, acompanying my sweet mother, who played the accordion.

From the platform, looking out at so many children of all ages (from one-year-olds to 15-year-olds), all week long I asked God to give me a vision for what these children could one day be. With God, nothing is impossible. Each of these children came from such different types of homes: some came from the poorest section of town with dirty, torn clothes; four of the children come from a home where Daddy is in prison for murder and Mommy has AIDS; some of the children come from a home where Daddy and Mommy are saved and active in church.
Such a diversity of situations.
But as I looked out at each one, I thought that God could use each one in a great way.

On Tuesday afternoon, the second day of our VBS, as we were giving the children their snacks before they went home, I looked across the yard and saw a tall man standing next to the door. I recognized him immediately. It was Arturo Garza Almaguer.

Arturo was saved through the ministries of Mount Hebron Baptist Ministries in Monterrey, Mexico. My Aunt told me that in 1974, Arturo was only 6 years old and came from a home of 11 children, whose father was an alcoholic and had lost everything he owned. They lived in extreme poverty in a little shack next to the river in El Barrial. At night, Arturo would sneak into the men's dorm where the Institute students slept and spend the night. The students reported this to my grandfather, who told Arturo that he didn't need to sneak into the dorms to sleep; he was welcome to sleep there whenever he wanted.

Since Arturo spent most of his time at Mount Hebron, my uncle asked Arturo's father if Arturo could come live with them; and his father, with no hesitation, said, "Yes."

My Aunt said that Arturo was painfully shy. She said when she'd pray for the boys in their ministry, she'd pray that they would become great preachers for God; but she said when she'd pray for Arturo, she'd pray he would become a great helper in the ministry someday, because she never dreamed he could ever be a preacher because he was just so shy.

Arturo told us that he got saved when he was six years old. When he would go out on the village trips and listen to the stories told to the village children, he'd hear the Gospel and got saved on one of those trips. He said that one day he and my grandfather, "Popsy," as everyone called him, were sitting on the back pew in the church during a service. Popsy put his arm around Arturo and said, "Arturo, that's gonna be you up there someday." He said he thought, "No, I could never do that." But he said he has never forgotten the confidence that Popsy had in him...that Popsy believed that Arturo was going to become somebody great someday.

When he was only 12 years old, he asked my uncle if he could enroll in the Bible Institute. After giving it much thought, my uncle gave him permission to be in the Bible Institute, and Arturo graduated when he was only 17 years old. He was ordained into the ministry at the age of 20.

God gave him a precious wife, Socorro, who also graduated from Mount Hebron Bible Institute.
(I remember when we would go visit Mimi and Popsy at Mount Hebron when I was about 8 years old, Sarah and I would run down the hill to the ladies' dorms and spend most of our time with the Institute ladies....how we loved spending time with them!
Socorro was one of our favorites....she'd let us try on her jewlery and she'd fix our hair this way and that way and give us "treasures" from her dresser.)

Arturo has been a pastor in Durango, Mexico for 18 years. The Lord has raised up a strong work there through him. What a BLESSING it was to see Arturo and Socorro after 20 years....still faithfully serving the Lord.

The next morning, when I went to Bible School, as I played the piano and looked out over the crowd of children that morning, I prayed, "God, give us some Arturos and Socorros out of this group of children! Raise up pastors and missionaries from this Bible School!"
Are you involved in a children's ministry of some kind? Ask God for a vision of what those children could be...ask God to raise up another Arturo. He can do it! He wants to do it! Some little child out there just needs you to put your arm arond him and say, "You're gonna be up there someday, leading the choir...teaching that class...playing the piano...preaching from a pulpit!"

VBS Blessings

Last week, we had our Vacation Bible School. The Lord blessed with many willing workers; a high attendance of 174; 30 children saved; many new contacts; and on Sunday there were nearly 200 present.

READY FOR BIBLE SCHOOL!

Growing up, Vacation Bible School week was my favorite. My mother puts her whole heart into everything she does; in my opinion she is the greatest children's teacher in the whole world. Thanks to her, I loved Sunday School and VBS growing up; and today I love all the wonderful Bible stories written in God's Word, and I passionately enjoy teaching those stories to children today, and I know it is because she planted that seed in my heart when I was a child.

BEAUTIFUL MOTHER...WONDERFUL TEACHER!
You must know, then, what a great honor and privilege it is for me now to see my children sit and listen to the same teacher teach the same lessons in the exact same way as I heard them when I was their age.

Mom made VBS so much fun...the songs, the Scripture verse contest, the lesson, the visitor contest, and closing off every day with the same song: "Hallelu".... If you have never seen my mother play her accordion and lead that song to nearly 200 children, you have missed a great blessing...what fun those children had last week! I know someday those sweet children will look back and be thankful for the wonderful teacher they had, just as I do now!
I have so many pictures I took, and I want to share them all, but will limit myself to the fewest possible, to let you peek in and see for yourself what a wonderful week we had and how the Lord blessed us!

Family Fun

What fun it is to be with family! What a blessing family is...those who know your weaknesses and love you in spite of them! Those who accept you for what you are, and who pray for you to become what God wants you to be!

Three weeks ago, my sister, Sarah, and her family came for an unexpected visit and we had such a wonderful family-fun time together! I snapped pictures here and there to capture the sweet moments, and had fun editing them on picnik.com.

Dad's Prayer List

Today, while cleaning some things in her room, Mom found Dad's prayer list. Because he had Parkinson's disease, his hands were shaky and he had a hard time writing. I remember on several occasions, he'd ask me to come in and write someone's name on his list. You will notice, though, that most of the handwriting is his. The rest was printed from his old typewriter.

This prayer list shows something about what kind of man Dad was....
Simple.

But some of the names on this prayer list were those of people with which he only had contact once or twice. Somehow they left an impression on him, or he was in some way impressed to pray for them.

I just wanted to share this...thought you might enjoy seeing it as much as I did.

"...the prayer of the upright is his delight."

One Nation Under God

Celebrating July 4th last year

As a United States citizen living in a "foreign" land (which to me is not so foreign!), America is a very special place to me.Growing up (and even to this day), we always had a special celebration on July 4th. We pledged to our flag every morning in school, and we learned US history in our school books.

I am married to a Mexican and I love Mexico. I grew up in Mexico; Mexico is home to me. When we go to the United States, it is for a visit, and we come back "home" to Mexico. Our children were born here in the clinic of a doctor-friend; I thank the Lord that our children have dual citizenship.

Living on the mission field, you hear the news (both from the local newscaster and US news on the internet) and the reports we get are mostly negative concerning the direction of our homeland. As a US citizen living on foreign soil, those reports are heartbreaking, creating a feeling of insecurity.

But for those of you living in the wonderful United States of America, I must tell you that when we went the States for a visit in December, the moment we crossed the border, we could feel the change. Even my Mexican husband commented on the change: the feeling of security; the obvious order due to the enforcement of the laws; the friendliness of people in just about any place of business. Don't take America for granted...enjoy the freedom and justice that come from living in that great land.

When we went to the States in December, I remember one of the last places we went before crossing the border to come back home was a Wal-mart. I had $50 dollars to purchase our last few "needed" items. I knew I had more than $50 worth of "treasures" in my cart....

As the cashier started to check out my items, I told her, "I only have $50...When you get to $50, you can stop." She replied, "Well, let me go ahead and check out all your items and we'll see how much it is." She cheerfully began checking out my items, and the total came to $57. She said, "Let me see," and she reached into her pocket and pulled out $2. "Here, I'll put this with your $50." A man standing behind me said, "How much do you need? Here, I've got $5." I stood there in disbelief....total disbelief. I turned, feeling a little embarrassed, to the man... "Oh, you don't have to do that!" He said, "No, I want to. But I'm gonna ask you to do something: When you see someone in need, return the favor. You remember what I've done for you today and return the favor someday to someone else who needs it."

Neither of them knew that I come from a foreign country, and that I was in the United States for a short visit, and that very soon I would be leaving that beloved country. Neither of them knew how touched I was at their friendliness, their "neighborliness."

I think the Lord did that just for me...to remind me that there are STILL good people, just good down-to-earth American people who have that great American neighborly spirit.

America is still great, fellow-citizens. Its people are still great. Keep that American pride. Let's continue to pray for her, for her leaders. Pray that God would have mercy on our nation...
the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Crossing the border into the U.S.....First time for my husband!

Below are the lyrics to part of a song sung by the Vocal Majority choir. My heart is touched as I listen to the song...and it gives a renewed hope...we have blessings to share, we have peace in our land...One Nation Under God....

We are a people who have a faith in God

We are a nation of the free

To live in God’s glory to dwell in His peace

His blessings for all the world to see….

We wake with the dawn, a new day is here

Our place is for foreseen under God

Our future is clear, we follow a path

That leads to the land of the free...
